Going on hiatus again.
Sunday, February 5th, 2006Looks like the 12″ G4 PowerBook has finally thrown up it’s hands. I’ve been having vague, non-specific troubles for some time now, lots of slowdown, SPOD for no apparent reason, etc. I’ve tried everything I can do: I’ve defragged, I’ve rebuilt permissions, run OnyX countless times, checked the disk with multiple utilities, even ran memtest. Nothing. I went so far as to do an archive-and-install, just to make sure it wasn’t something lurking down deep inside my system folder. Still having the same, nonspecific troubles.
The other day, as I was leaving for work, I needed to unmount my iPod and found, to my unsurprised annoyance, that the screen wouldn’t unlock. More specifically, the PB would SPOD out and never present the password dialogue. I reset the machine and, unplugged my iPod and went my way. Same thing happened two more times until it wouldn’t boot at all. Now the PowerBook won’t boot from either the internal or the external backup. Reboot, get the Apple that replaced the old Happy Mac and then…. nothing. Blue screen. Great.
The good news is that I shouldn’t be losing a lot of data. The bad news is that I don’t know when I will be able to podcast again. All the various gear is in another room and I just don’t feel like hauling it out here. So, unless something really remarkable happens, we’re on hiatus until the new PowerBook (cough, I mean MacBook) arrives, which, Apple promises, will be sometime in February.
See you in a few weeks.
